The principle of the foundation and the building given in 1 Cor. 3 is a vital tool that can be used to help
God’s people to rightly divide the Word of God. In essence, this is how God’s Word is written:

The foundational truth is stated first, followed by a truth that represents the building to be built on the
foundation. Here are several examples that need careful meditation:

THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST: THE UNFINISHED WORK OF THE SPIRIT

“BUT WHEN THE KINDNESS AND THE LOVE OF “THIS IS A FAITHFUL SAYING,
GOD OUR SAVIOR TOWARD MAN APPEARED, AND THESE THINGS I WANT YOU TO AFFIRM
NOT BY WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH WE
HAVE DONE, BUT ACCORDING TO HIS MERCY CONSTANTLY, THAT THOSE WHO HAVE
HE SAVED US…THAT HAVING BEEN JUSTIFIED BELIEVED IN GOD SHOULD BE CAREFUL TO
                                                MAINTAIN GOOD WORKS…LET OUR PEOPLE
BY HIS GRACE WE SHOULD BECOME HEIRS ALSO LEARN TO MAINTAIN GOOD WORKS,
ACCORDING TO THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE.” TO MEET URGENT NEEDS, THAT THEY MAY

                                   Titus 3:5-7 NOT BE UNFRUITFUL.”
                                                                           Titus 3:8,15

“…YOU HAVE KNOWN THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, “ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF
WHICH ARE ABLE GOD AND IS PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE,
                                                         FOR REPROOF, FOR CORRECTION,
TO MAKE YOU WISE FOR SALVATION FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS,
                           THROUGH FAITH
THAT THE MAN OF GOD MAY BE COMPLETE,
WHICH IS IN CHRIST JESUS THOROUGHLY EQUIPPED
                                 2 Tim. 3:15
                                                               FOR EVERY GOOD WORK.”
“FOR BY GRACE 2 Tim. 3:16-17
YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED THROUGH FAITH,
                                                           “FOR WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP,
AND THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES; CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS
IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD, FOR GOOD WORKS,
                        NOT OF WORKS,
                                                         WHICH GOD PREPARED BEFOREHAND
LEST ANYONE SHOULD BOAST.” THAT WE SHOULD WALK IN THEM.”
                               Eph. 2:8-9 Eph. 2:10

“FOR THE GRACE OF GOD THAT BRINGS “…AND
SALVATION HAS APPEARED TO ALL MEN, PURIFY FOR HIMSELF
     TEACHING US THAT DENYING UNGODLINESS
                                                         HIS OWN
                       AND WORLDLY LUSTS, SPECIAL PEOPLE,
       WE SHOULD LIVE SOBERLY, RIGHTEOUSLY,
AND GODLY IN THIS PRESENT AGE, LOOKING ZEALOUS
                                                             FOR
FOR THE BLESSED HOPE AND GLORIOUS
APPEARING OF OUR GREAT GOD AND SAVIOR GOOD WORKS.”
                                                         Titus 2:14b
JESUS CHRIST, WHO GAVE HIMSELF FOR US,
                  THAT HE MIGHT REDEEM US

               FROM EVERY LAWLESS DEED…”
                               Titus 2:11-14a

The above Scriptures are but a portion of passages that reveal the two aspects of the Christian’s
interaction with the finished foundational work of Jesus Christ and the yet-to-be finished work of the
Holy Spirit. Note carefully that all the passages above are written in a contextual manner in which the
foundation of the believer is enumerated first, but followed by a higher on-going call for the believer to
good works. Those who receive God’s grace are to go on to manifesting good works!
