“THEN ALL THE ELDERS OF ISRAEL GATHERED TOGETHER AND CAME TO SAMUEL AT RAMAH,
AND SAID TO HIM…
‘MAKE FOR US A KING TO JUDGE US LIKE ALL THE NATIONS…’
AND THE LORD SAID TO SAMUEL, ‘HEED THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IN ALL THAT THEY SAY TO
YOU; FOR THEY HAVE NOT REJECTED YOU, BUT THEY HAVE REJECTED ME,
THAT I SHOULD NOT REIGN OVER THEM…’
NEVERTHELESS THE PEOPLE REFUSED TO OBEY THE VOICE OF SAMUEL; AND THEY SAID,
‘NO, BUT WE WILL HAVE A KING OVER US,
THAT WE ALSO MAY BE LIKE ALL THE NATIONS,
AND THAT OUR KING MAY JUDGE US AND GO OUT BEFORE US AND FIGHT OUR BATTLES.’”

Solomon gave warning that history repeats itself in saying, “That which has been is what will be, that
which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun…it has already been in
ancient times before us” (Ecc. 1:9-10). In ancient times, Israel, like the church today, had its eyes fixed
upon being just like all the nations in the world. It wasn't good enough for God to rule over His own
people, they decided they wanted to be just like all the nations around them. The politically-based
religious-right segment of American Christianity is repeating the sin of Israel. They want a king of their
own choosing. It is not sufficient that Jesus is already the King reigning over His Kingdom on earth.
