LESSON SIX:
“THE LAW-THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN”
Read carefully the comments from Dietrich
Bonhoeffer below pertaining to Paul’s epistle to the
Romans. This epistle is among Paul’s works that
the apostle Peter deemed “things hard to
understand” (2 Pet.3:16). More damage has been
done to Christianity by the careless application of
little snippets from Romans than any other work
Paul authored. It is possible to make Romans say
anything we want unless we carefully consider the
entire context.
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPREHENDING
“THE EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS IS PAUL’S
MOST COMPREHENSIVE PRESENTATION OF
THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IN SCRIPTURE.
HOWEVER, RARELY IS IT PRESENTED IN
ITS FULLNESS TO GOD’S PEOPLE,
BUT RATHER IS CHOPPED UP INTO
PREFERRED SNIPPETS IN SUPPORT OF
Die trich Bonhoe ffe r PROMOTING ISOLATED TRUTHS.
ROMANS IS A DIFFICULT BOOK DEPICTING A DIFFICULT WAY
OF LIFE. STUDY IT WELL, AND YOU WILL BE WELL-BALANCED
AS A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST” (The Cost of Discipleship)
