A PAST-TENSE AN ONGOING

Let us begin our search for the proper answer to that question. The Bible does not place ALL aspects
of salvation as a past-tense possession, but rather, in certain areas, states it clearly as an on-going
process.
We can begin by considering a comparison of 4 translations of one verse, 1 Cor. 1:18. We will use
(1) The King James Version, (2) New King James Version, (3) Amplified Bible, (4) Greek Interlinear
Bible:

(1) THE KING JAMES BIBLE:

“FOR THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS IS TO THEM THAT PERISH FOOLISHNESS;

BUT UNTO US WHICH ARE SAVED IT IS THE POWER OF GOD.” 1 Cor 1:18 KJV
(2) THE NEW KING JAMES BIBLE:

“FOR THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS IS FOOLISHNESS TO THOSE WHO ARE PERISHING,

BUT TO US WHO ARE BEING SAVED IT IS THE POWER OF GOD.” 1 Cor 1:18 KJV
(3) THE AMPLIFIED BIBLE:

“ FOR THE STORY AND MESSAGE OF THE CROSS IS SHEER ABSURDITY AND FOLLY TO THOSE WHO
ARE PERISHING AND ON THEIR WAY TO PERDITION, BUT TO US WHO ARE BEING SAVED IT IS THE

[MANIFESTATION OF] THE POWER OF GOD.” 1 Cor 1:18 Amp.

(4) GREEK INTERLINEAR BIBLE (A literal translation of the greek language)

The notable difference is that the King James Bible places the act of salvation in a total state of present
possession for the believer rather than as an on-going process being completed as stated by the other
translations. However, before you jump to the conclusion that the other translations must be wrong,
note carefully that even the Greek Interlinear Bible renders the original language the exact same
conclusion that salvation is properly stated as “being saved” (a process) rather than “are saved” (a
possession). It is the King James Bible that is in error in the translation of this verse. What is lacking is
a proper verb-tense emphasis that is given in the other translations. However, our case does not rest
on this isolated fact alone.
